If you love travelling you know what a difference some knowledge of the local language can make, even in places where English is widely spoken. A few words or a few phrases here and there, not to mention whole stretches of conversation, can do wonders: it can break the ice in an instant, and most people appreciate even the most awkward of attempts.
If you are planning to travel to Italy and you would like to learn a healthy dose of Italian before you go, forget the usual phrase book or podcast course for travellers and join our Beginner courses! We assume that the vast majority of our students will be travelling to Italy, either for the first time or will be returning to Italy in the future. Therefore, apart from learning how to construct sentences, develop conversational skills so that you can actually hold conversations, and gaining a basic understanding of how the language works, our Beginner courses also cover a wide range of topics which are ideal for travellers. However, please be aware that, due to time, we cannot cover all the tourist-related topics in a single eight week course, no matter how much we would love to do so. However, you will find our courses extremely useful in providing you with the travel-related Italian and the travel tips that will truly enhance your visit to Italy. So join us at the Centre and be surprised by how much you will learn, how much you will be able to say, and how much fun it is to learn and speak Italian!
If you are an absolute beginner, or you have a smattering of Italian, visit the Italia 500 Italian Beginner 1 course page. If you've completed a beginner course elsewhere, visit the Italia 500 Italian Beginner 2 course page. If you've completed at least 36 hours of formal Italian tuition, visit the Italia 500 Italian Beginner 3 course page.
Buon viaggio!
We assume that the vast majority of our students will be travelling to Italy, either for the first time or will be returning to Italy in the future and, if you love travelling, you know what a difference some knowledge of the local language can make, even in places where English is widely spoken. A few words or a few phrases here and there can do wonders and break the ice in an instant. Thus, all our courses, at all levels, cover a wide range of topics which are ideal for travellers.
What distinguishes the Italia 500 Italian for Travellers course - consisting of one two hour class per week, for a total of 4 weeks (8 hours tuition) - from our standard eight week courses is that the Italian for travellers course offers a distillation of some of the travel related topics we cover in our standard courses. So, during the course, you'll learn how to order in a cafe and a restaurant; ask for directions - yes, despite Google Maps!; how to greet and thank people; to understand opening and closing times; to understand the transport timetable; how to purchase things in a delicatessen; and how to ask for the price of and pay for something. During the course we will also learn how to pronounce the names of the places you'll be visiting and the dishes you'll be ordering whilst sharing travel tips and insights.
Therefore, apart from learning how to construct sentences, develop conversational skills so that you can actually hold conversations, and gaining a basic understanding of how the language works, our Beginner courses also cover a wide range of topics which are ideal for travellers.
If you'd like to share the experience of learning some Italian before setting off to Italy, with a range of truly interesting people whose contagious enthusiasm turns each Italian lesson into a gathering of friends rather than a formal Italian class, and if you'd like to immerse yourself in a bright, richly Italian environment that inspires and infuses the students, and the teachers too, then our in-class Italian for Travellers course - consisting of one two hour class per week, for a total of 4 weeks (8 hours tuition) - is the course for you!
