The ABC screened, two weeks ago, a lovely and very interesting story by Foreign Correspondent on Operation Mare Nostrum, the operation by the Italian Navy aimed at rescuing refugees attempting to reach Italy by sea. The operation (set up after the tragic sinking of a boat of refugees, on the 3rd of October 2013, off the coast of the island of Lampedusa, in which over 360 people lost their lives) will cease tomorrow, the first of November, and will be replaced by a less ambitious operation, named Triton, coordinated and financed by the European Union. Humanitarian groups are protesting as they believe that the new operation will be inadequate to deal with the crisis and it's hard to disagree with them. The story by Foreign Correspondent is lovely because it portrays the humanity of both the refugees and the rescuers and you can watch it by clicking on the clip above or by visiting the Foreign Correspondent site.
